Our Mission
Unlock potential, promote self-discovery, and inspire growth
How We Carry Out Our Mission
We foster positive peer relationships, self-confidence, and environmental stewardship by connecting individuals with nature and each other through hands-on learning experiences. Our highly customized programs in exciting and spectacular settings provide people with adventures that broaden their horizons (literally and figuratively).
Who We Serve
We serve participants of all ages (kindergarten and older) who take part on a fee-for-service basis, as well as grant-supported members of community groups who lack opportunities to explore the outdoors. Our program is sustained by grants, donations, and fees for service.
Who We Are
Founded in 1975, Outdoor Adventures by Boojum is a nonprofit organization that helps people learn more about themselves, each other, and the environment. We create custom programming that includes but is not limited to hiking, rock climbing, high-ropes courses, and other fun, yet challenging activities. We strive to offer a brand of education that is deeply enjoyable, personally rewarding, and unforgettable.
What is a Boojum?
Lewis Carroll’s poem, “The Hunting of the Snark,” features a mythical creature that eludes definition: the magical and mysterious Boojum. Throughout the poem, as the party searches for the Snark, the Boojum regularly appears, challenging the party’s narrow focus and obsession with finding the Snark.
The moral of the poem is that our rush to reach preconceived destinations can sometimes blind us to the beauty and wonder of the journey. Boojum is about facilitating life’s journey. The Institute has taken an image of the Boojum tree, found in central Baja California, as its symbol. The Boojum tree (Fouquieria columnaris) a member of the plant family that includes ocotillos.
