Programs & Activities

Climbing high into the trees, belaying one another with ropes, shouting encouragement to one another as they fly down a zip line or helping each other across a high traverse initiative, all are part of a high ropes challenge experience that The Outdoor Adventures by Boojum can design for your group.

Our challenge course is located at the Idyllwild Pines Camp in the beautiful San Jacinto Mountains in Idyllwild – close to all of Southern California – and consists of a comprehensive set of ground initiative and both low and high “elements”.

The low elements provide a level of challenge that is close to the ground and are protected by spotting provided by the group. High elements involve initiatives that are 30-45 feet off the ground on cables and ropes. Belay systems that include the use of ropes, body harnesses and friction devices are used to control movement and protect participants during these initiatives.

The wonder and majesty of the desert ecosystem is often misunderstood although it is the perfect location for earth science education. The open night sky with vast views of the stars is also a prime location for astronomy. Our desert ecosystem program provide students with the opportunity to learn about science outside of school, to experientially identify plants while hiking, study the endangered species native to the area, climb on rocks in different phases of the rock life cycle and also sleep under a blanket of our galaxy.

Water is our life resource and gaining a better understanding of its significant role is important to our survival. Although, most people don’t think about where their water comes from or how it arrived, we provide students with the ability to gain a better understanding through our teaching in experiential education. While students may not understand how water moves between the oceans and the land through the water cycle, a canoeing or kayaking activity on the ocean or in an estuary, students will be in the ideal setting to learn about water, the cycle, how to protect this resource that is significant for survival.

Boojum’s Urban Expeditions offers participants an experiential journey within the rich cultural, historical, and human environment of a major California metropolitan area. Participants on these expeditions explore the city’s urban wilderness and their own “inner wilderness” as they learn real-life skills for success in an environment many call home.

Urban Expedition participants are exposed to a unique environment that offers a wide variety of learning opportunities. Structured group challenges encourage participants to develop group and individual skills that will support them later in life. These challenges and activities include a structured, multi-day urban scavenger hunt, where participants learn about economics, culture, history, urban geography, commerce and careers through guided hands-on investigation of aspects of city life. Students practice real-life skills like budgeting, food preparation and managing public transit systems, and have the opportunity to participate in service learning, cultural events, and other city adventures.

The urban experience helps participants translate the lessons of teamwork and the self-confidence that come from successfully completing experiential challenges into their home, school and work lives. For those who will go on to live in metropolitan or developed areas, the skills for surviving and success in the “urban jungle” are directly applicable to their futures. This experiential program is a wonderful adventure in bringing learning to life while encouraging appreciation of others and a greater awareness of the built environment.
