Wildfire Destroys Boojum Offices

On July 11, 2006, a powerful wildfire began that would eventually scorch over 100 square miles of southern California. The fire destroyed Boojum Institute's Pioneertown offices. Thankfully, no staff were injured, although the fire came on our campus so quickly that some staff took refuge in a nearby fire truck while forty-foot flames set trees fiercely ablaze and our exit road was blocked by smoke and flame. Despite the loss of several buildings and their contents, Boojum's field programs have remarkably continued without interruption. Tens of thousands of dollars of equipment was burned, however, including 31 years' accumulation of supplies and records, and the personal possessions of ten staff.

During the Fire
After the Fire

We teach our program participants to thrive on challenge and adventure, and we believe the same can be true for the Boojum Institute itself. While we see this as an exciting story of triumph through adversity, we are seeking financial support to help Boojum re-build after this loss. Please consider donating to the Boojum Institute today!
